Introducing Our Baby Girl

Baby E finally made her arrival in the early hours of Sunday morning (February 19th)!
We are all completely in love (including S, who is an excellent big brother already) and we're all doing well. She was a sizable little lady - 10lbs 1oz and 22 3/4" long. I'll be back to share more of the details of how she came into the world if you're interested (I had a successful VBAC), but not for a while probably - for now, we're just enjoying adjusting to being a family of four. :)

Whaddup MTV...

...check out my new crib. Literally:
{Oeuf Sparrow Crib in grey}
Initially we were just going to use S's crib for the baby, but we've been finding out all kinds of horrible things about engineered wood and off-gassing and the long-term health effects it can have on babies, so we decided that it wasn't worth the risk and have forked out some big ones for this solid birch, not-made-in-China beauty.  I just wish we'd known about it when S was born! Or before I upholstered the bed for his big boy room and used plywood to extend the headboard. Now I have to go back and replace it with real wood, which will be a bit of a faff. He's not moving in there for another couple of months though, so I'll worry about that later.

Anyhoo, we were lucky enough to find the crib on Craigslist for considerably less than it costs new, and the one we picked up was apparently only used for six weeks. It looks new, and it is really sturdy - much more so than S's current crib.

Want to see how it's going to work with the rest of the nursery? Here's the design board, which I've tweaked to include some of my more recent design choices:
I am prone to changing my mind rather a lot. It's come a bit of a way from my original plan:
I didn't want to paint the room, so the new version uses the current wall color. I lost the baby blue and pink in favor of turquoise and coral, switched the green accents to lilac and grey, and changed pretty much all the art and the fabrics. It's got a more modern vibe now, which will work better with the industrial feel of our abode, I think, but it's still girly and pretty and colorful. I'll share sources when it's all put together, but if you want more details on anything in the meantime just leave me a comment. :)

Speaking of our abode, our landlord recently informed us that he's listing the condo for short sale. Perfect timing, right?! Okay, I know it's (probably) not really his fault, but he did wait till the month after we renewed our lease to share this info with us (he's thoughtful like that). So there's a good chance we'll be moving in the next few months (most likely to a similar unit close by), and as a result, I'm not planning any projects that we can't take with us; the stenciled wall in the design board is probably not going to happen anymore (*sniff*). I suppose the down-side of having a landlord nice enough to let us paint and personalize the place is that I'm pretty sure we've just made it easier for him to sell. Bah.

Finally, if you've joined me via Linky Followers - hi! Thanks so much for stopping by, and I promise I am not ignoring you all - I am looking forward to checking out all your blogs just as soon as I have time! It's been a bit rushed trying to prep for the baby - maybe I'll get a chance to catch up on my blog reading in the hospital once she makes her arrival! :)

Simple Silhouette Art for the Nursery

A while ago, I pinned this picture of a dog silhouette that I wanted to recreate for S's big boy room. Well, as it turned out, there wasn't any space on the walls in there for it. In the nursery, though, I had the perfect spot, so I did a girly version...
You Will Need:
- Photo of your pet (or your kids, or anything else you might want to make art out of)
- Decorative paper
- Ribbon (optional)
- Glue and/or double-sided sticky tape
- Frame

The most time-consuming part of this simple project was finding a photo of our dog, Ted, that would make a good, recognizable silhouette. I settled on this one of him as a puppy (he's the super stumpy one in the middle). I think he was about 3 months old (it's a photo the breeder sent us, before I went to pick him up). Gotta love Corgi puppies!
I blew it up to the size I wanted, printed it and cut him out.
I used the cut out as a template to transfer the image onto the back of a sheet of decorative paper.
With the silhouette cut out, I used double-sided sticky tape to attach it to some corrugated card stock. It's hard to see in the photos, but it adds texture and dimension to the finished piece.
Because the frame is white, I felt like it needed an extra punch of color, so I used some coral grosgrain ribbon to make a border. I stuck it down using a smidgen of school glue (hot glue would work as well).
Framed, it makes a cute and colorful addition to the mini-gallery wall I'm putting together in the nursery (I'll show you the rest of the wall once it's done).
I love that it's so obviously Ted. And it co-ordinates well with the updated mats I'm using on the opposite wall too:
